Curiosities

Passing under the long bridge brings good luck in fishing. Pass under the small one, however, and your luck will be poor.

The brig “Marie-Berthe”

After the wreck of the brig “Marie-Berthe”, a W was carved on Fiskholmen. The mark is on the rock face facing north-east, in towards the Bottnafjorden. The ship was wrecked in 1875 off Testholmen and was towed to Fiskholmen.

The sand by the stone pier

Almost every beach in Bovallstrand consists of shell sand, but not the little cove by the land on the outer side of the stone pier. The reason is that right beside it there once stood a jetty where boats collected stone, fish and other goods shipped out from Bovallstrand. Many boats carried sand as ballast on their way to Bovallstrand. The sand was dumped beside the jetty, and it is this sand that the little beach is made of.

The Crown Prince’s signature

The Crown Prince (later King Gustaf VI Adolf) carved his name in the rock just south-east of the diving tower. This was at the opening of Badholmarna in 1935.

Fish smokery

On Fiskholmen (Biskopsholmen) there once stood small boathouses used for smoking fish. This was probably at some point between 1910 and 1930. They were intended only for household use. They were sited here most likely because the fire risk made it too dangerous to have them next to the other houses and boathouses on land.

The cookery book “Köksvägen till Västsverige”

The cookery book “Köksvägen till Västsverige” carries the fine picture below across a spread. The picture belongs with the section on Bryggcafét here in Bovallstrand. More about the book at www.nok.se (under NOK/LTs förlag/Mat). The original photographs are by Lisa Nestorson.

The picture from the book was scanned and does not show the whole spread. It is published by permission of Lisa Nestorson and LTs förlag.

Winners of the Bovallsrodden

In 1999 AB Bovallstrands Badinrättning (the bathing company) won the Bovallsrodden rowing race. The members of the team appear on the plaque below.

Sea sparkle

In late summer, brown-pink plankton can gather at the water’s edge. They are entirely harmless to people. This is how it looked in the outermost cove on Fiskholmen in late July 2004. These plankton are known as sea sparkle, and at night they give off a magical glowing green light. But they only glow when they are set in motion.

Geocaching

Naturally there is more than one cache hidden on Badholmarna. More about geocaching here:
